Town of North Hempstead

Town of North Hempstead

OVERVIEW

Located in the Northwest region of Nassau County is the Town of North Hempstead. Due to the political differences with South Hempstead, North Hempstead became its own township in 1784. In the early 1900s the north shore of Hempstead became known as The Gold Coast. Trains and automobiles helped the commute be quicker to and from Manhattan, so the town of North Hempstead became a place where people could go to escape the busy city life. Sands Point and Great Neck, both located in the town of North Hempstead were the towns for the famous F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, "The Great Gatsby".

In the Town of North Hempstead there are 30 incorporated villages and 20 unincorporated hamlets. It is the home to over 200,000 residents according to the 2010 census.
