At the eastern end of Suffolk County on the south shore you will find a popular tourist community, the town of East Hampton. This town is very popular in the summer time because there are many beaches surrounding the town. According to the 2010 census, there are about 24,000 residents living in this town. It was originally called Maidstone, Kent, England but was later changed to Easthampton reflecting the names of its neighbors Southampton and Westhampton. It was split into 2 words in 1885 after a local newspaper the East Hampton Star began using the 2-word name. The town is made up of 2 villages and 5 hamlets. One of the most popular places to visit in the Town of East Hampton is the hamlet of Montauk. Montauk is a great summer spot to go and relax on the beach, visit the Montauk Lighthouse, and do many fun summer activities! Right down the road from Montauk you can find Hither Hills State Park. This park offers a beach, picnic areas, nature trails, hiking, fishing, and much more. If you are looking for a great spot for golfing, there are some great courses here. One of them Is the 18-hole championship golf course in the Montauk Downs State Park. It is rated as one ofAmericas top public golf courses and also was ranked second overall in the Golf World list of Readers Choice Awards for its value. Also in the town is the Sag Harbor State Golf Course. This is a 9-hole course located in the middle of a 341-acre parcel. The town also has a ferry that will take you to Block Island.
