At the eastern end of Long Island is the Town of Shelter Island. It sits between the North Fork and South Fork and is surrounded on 3 sides by the Shelter Island Sound and Gardiners Bay. Unlike the other Long Island towns, you can’t just drive here. To get here you will have to take a ferry which can also carry your car over. If you are looking to get to the North side of the town, you need to take the ferry out of Greenport which is about a 10 minute trip. If you are looking to get to the South side of the town, you will need to take the ferry that runs out of North Haven which is about a 5 minute trip. The Town of Shelter Island includes only 1 village and 5 hamlets. About half of the island is owned by the Nature Conservancy to be preserved in a wild state and will remain that way forever. The other half of the island is home to about 2,000 residents. The Island has a great bike-friendly terrain, and since there are not many cars on the island and not a single stop-light! There are also a few places along the island where you can rent a bike for an inexpensive price if you don’t have one of your own. Another popular thing to do in the Town of Shelter Island is, of course, to visit the beautiful beaches! Some beaches in the town include: • Crescent Beach • Wades Beach • Shell Beach • Menhadden Lane Beach • Fresh Pond All these beaches are Town Public Beaches. If you have a vehicle, you must have a beach sticker for these. There are daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal permits you can obtain to access these beaches.
